I’m not a nutritionist, chef, photographer or writer but, I have a passion for clean eating, talking and I can type! Here is my family’s story… starting with me:

HISTORY

I’ve never been a “skinny” girl… always “medium/large”.  I played basketball throughout high school and I weighed 145.  I was not the fastest one on the team to say the least!

1997

I had the opportunity to play community college basketball but still ended up finding my freshman 15.

After a year of riding the bench, I moved back to Alaska and joined the Alaska Air National Guard.  I was over the weight allotment to enlist.  I enlisted on a weight waiver.  After a few weeks of boot camp basic training I was able to come off the weight-waiver.

However, every year, I would fail the waist-tape and out would come the excuses: ”Im big boned”,  ”my hip bone is way up here”, and “if I have to run from a bad guy, we’ve lost the war”.  After a few years in the Air Guard I met the man of my dreams!

This man of my dreams loved everything about me, all 175 pounds of me (Im 5’5 and three quarters), so we validated our love in front of  God, family and friends… and I experienced the happiest day of my life.   Little did I know that was going to be the lowest weight I’d see for quite a while.

The following year I gave birth to my precious JR.  The day I delivered I weighed 222.

I spent four days in labor and recovery was very slow.  When JR was 10 months old, my step mother signed me up for a 1/2 marathon and I trained my butt off.  I followed the training to a “T”…. and I finished with 1/2 marathon without dying!  I had got down to 180, but soon after the race, I found out I was pregnant with my princess, JY.

This time I did NOT look at the scale!  A year later I was 185.  I stayed at 185.  I started to come up with excuses, my favorite was: “Oh, this is just baby weight “… I was prepared to use that line until she graduated from high school.

In the fall of 2009 we PCS’d to sunny, skinny, Okinawa.  I did not want to live here what so ever.  I had no desire to lay out on a beach with skinny people… ever.  I started running.  Then I went to zumba.  Then I ran some more.  Then I ran and did zumba.  And then I gave up.  I threw my hands in the air, looked in the mirror and told myself: “this is as good as its gonna get.  Be happy- this IS your body”.

Then I met a girl.  As soon as I met her I knew I wanted to be her friend.  I heard through the grapevine (small island, small grapevine) that she was going to do a “demo” at Crossfit Asia.  I called that day and signed up.

Shortly after my bootcamp I landed my dream job!  It was amazing!  BUT, there was no way I could work full time, be a Mom, a wife, be apart of the coolest wives group on the planet, AND still workout.  No way.

Then I met Ivan.  Ivan the Terrible.  He was my trainer at work and he was out of patience.  But on one super special day (it was a full moon for the record) we started talking about weight.  He told me that he used to be super chubby and that if he “could lose the weight then anyone could”.  He went on to tell me he had the weight loss secret: “you know how to do it.  Everyone knows how to lose weight.  You just have to shut up and do it.”  Not was I was hoping for, but I expected nothing less.

At this point in my life I was barely making it through training, my kids had to deal with “tired Mom”, and my husband started preferring to be TDY.  Everything sucked.  Super sucked.  And I thought to myself, “how could I make this situation any more sucky?”  I made a New Years resolution.  I want to lose 20 pounds.

PALEO

Crossfit Asia briefed us on a way of life called “paleo”.  It sounded like a great way to eat if you were trying out for the NBA, the Olympics or an Ironman.  It sounded too crazy for a normal family.  Plus, with the bootcamp alone I lost 6 pounds!!!!!  Success!!!!

Blog after blog, article after article I started to consider it.  It made sense.  Starting in January of 2011 I began eating Paleo twice a week.  Tuesdays and Thursdays were my paleo days.  I found almost every recipe from www.everydaypaleo.com.  I went to Crossfit Asia three to four times a week and after 4 weeks I was down 2 pounds.  2 pounds might not sound like much, but I could really feel it!

In February, I added a new day.  Mon, Tues and Weds were my paleo days.  A month later few more pounds.

The lowest I have seen was 147 pounds when I did a lean up challenge at Crossfit Asia.  I didn’t win but I felt great (I don’t have a picture though)!

Paleo, for me, isn’t trying to become a caveman and relinquish the technological advancements of 2013, but rather adopting the idea that the quality of food can affect my body.  We eat meat, veggies a little fruits and nuts and don’t take ourselves too terribly seriously…
